Links and Additional Resources

There are several excellent resources for those interested in the history of Hobbs.
  • Ralph Tasker's World History class of 1954-55 compiled a history that has been made available online.
  • Gil Hinshaw's book Lea, New Mexico's Last Frontier contains information about the origins and growth of Hobbs.
  • Lynn C. Mauldin's book Lea County New Mexico: A Pictorial History has photographs of early Hobbs, along with other communities in Lea County.  Lea County State Bank sponsored publication of the book and may continue to have copies available for purchase.
  • Then and Now: Lea Families and History Vols. I and II were published by the Lea County Genealogical Society, Inc. and contain the stories of Lea County families in their own words, including many photographs.
  • The Hobbs Public Library has a local history reference section of the Hobbs Public Library, which also includes city directories beginning in 1935.  Each gives a detailed "snapshot" of the population and businesses during the year of publication.  The library also has the four books listed above.
  • The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland, Texas has generously shared photographs of early Hobbs from their vast collections.
